What We Do
Montanova Stables is home to Montanova Stables Foundation, providing horsemanship-based programs in support of area youth. Montanova also offers lessons for all ages and horse boarding.
Afterschool Program
During the school year, students come to our barn for afterschool enrichment through horseback riding lessons, horsemanship, and work in the barn. Students gain a valuable sense of accomplishment and increase self-confidence as they master these skills in the barn and on horseback. Each MSF child is taught in a safe and supportive environment. They receive one-on-one mentoring through a partnership with the University of Virginia’s Madison House, an independent volunteer center for students at the University of Virginia. This community connection not only provides crucial support for our programming, but also allows our Foundation students to engage with individuals from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. These experiences create a bond of trust between the student, the horse, and their mentor. Our students are able to attend after school programming, at no cost to their families, thanks to the generosity of our community.
Each year, MSF is proud to see several members of our After-School Program graduate from students to Mentors. This vital step in their self-confidence and independence journeys allows them not only to take on additional responsibilities in a leadership role, but also helps them practice engaging with their peers in meaningful ways outside. Research increasingly shows the detrimental effects that technology is having on younger generations and how vital interpersonal skills and social-emotional learning is to help maintain mental well-being and healthy growth. Being inherently technology-free and people-first, the after-school and mentorship programs at MSF help youth build resilience, social aptitude, and autonomy.
Our students are able to attend at no cost to their families thanks to the generosity of our community. Everything - transportation, snacks, safe riding attire, cost of the horses in the program - is covered by the foundation.
Mentorship
MSF’s mentorship program plays a pivotal role in achieving our mission. The program is designed to promote personal growth, instill responsibility, and cultivate leadership skills. Central to our approach is the utilization of equine assisted learning, which we believe to be a transformative tool. Our mentors guide children and adults alike in the art of horse riding, fostering independence, collaboration, and leadership qualities in the process.
At the heart of the program lies a structured curriculum, through which mentors progress through various horsemanship levels. This journey equips them with essential skills and knowledge in horse care, riding techniques, and equine safety. Moreover, it encourages mentors to explore their interests in different facets of the equine industry, broadening their horizons and enhancing their expertise.
However, our program goes beyond mere horsemanship. We also prioritize the cultivation of kindness and compassion, creating a community where students aged six to eighteen can flourish as confident, responsible, and empathetic leaders. Through our mentorship, we seek to provide students with a well-rounded understanding of horsemanship, adaptability, respect, and a passion for making positive contributions to society.
Currently, our mentor program boasts over 30 students drawn from our lesson program, after-school program, and scholarship-based students. Our motivated group of mentors are eager to learn, grow, and inspire positive change in themselves and those they engage with.
Summer Camp
MSF offers one-week summer camps throughout the summer. For the past three years, MSF summer camps registration has opened in February and is completely full by the end of March with a waitlist for each week. The camps teach a full range of horsemanship skills. Children have a riding lesson each day at their skill level. For those who are new to horses, instruction on grooming, tacking, and horse care is provided.
Small numbers in our summer camps allow us to provide individualized attention in a safe, nurturing environment. Campers work with professional instructors and experienced mentors to develop skills and improve confidence. Aside from riding, the campers each adopt a horse for the week. They are responsible for all the care of that horse including - mucking their stall, feeding, watering and tending to any medical needs.
Our goal is for campers to gain a sense of independence and self-confidence through their interactions with the horses and with each other. Our existing lesson students help with the camps. This develops into wonderful mentoring among the children! We incorporate games, crafts and group activities into our camp days.
The camps run from 9am - 4pm for full day and 9am - 1pm for half day. Extended hours can be arranged for those parents with scheduling conflicts. We take children ages 5 and up.
Drill Team
The Montanova Stables Foundation Drill Team is a pattern-based riding team that is learning precision riding, teamwork, leadership, and mounted accuracy with horses and ponies. Our Drill Team brings together our boarders, lesson students, and mentors. Participants range in age from eight to 74 and have a significant range in riding ability. These riders have been working weekly on improving their horsemanship skills all while incorporating increasingly difficult maneuvers and exercises to form a mounted drill team that performs in rhythm with music. The Montanova Stables Foundation Drill Team strongly supports horsemanship, sportsmanship, teamwork, and dedication as they showcase a musical performance on horseback.
Vet Club
The Vet Club was established to support any rider or horseperson interested in furthering their veterinary knowledge. Hosted by Keswick Equine Clinic's Dr. Shelly McDaniel, DVM, this club gives our students accessible knowledge of horse health and nutrition.
Lessons
Montanova Stables Foundation, owned and managed by Jennifer Jones, has a well-established lesson program teaching students of all ages and ability levels. Jennifer has been teaching English hunt seat in a safe and supportive environment since 1996.
All of our students learn to groom, tack, and ride the horses. They are encouraged to achieve independence in all they do. We allow the more experienced riders to mentor and assist the novice ones. Students who express interest are allowed to help with the daily barn chores - some even progress to helping with lessons.
Other instructors are available to provide quality instruction in a variety of disciplines. With backgrounds in eventing, hunters, jumpers and dressage, instructors can tailor lessons to meet personal goals. Some of our students work towards attending local horse shows and hunter paces, while others work towards building their skills on our farm. All levels are welcomed and provided with individualized instruction.
While many of the programs at Montatova are geared toward children, adult riders are a big part of our community, too. Our adult lessons help students get back in shape after a long time out of the saddle, refine existing riding skills, discover a new joy, and/or provide time for personal renewal. Our adult riders have varying ability levels and personal goals.
Boarding
We offer quality care at affordable rates. Our facility is situated on 50 acres; field and stall boarding is available, plus access to a sand riding ring, unlimited access to trails, and a large jumping field. Our barn has 16 stalls, wash stalls, and rooming stalls. All horses are handled daily by experienced staff, and we can provide support for medical care, when necessary.
Many of our boarders are also supporters of the Montanova mission and community.
At present, our boarding facilities are full. You are welcome to check in with us, and we are happy to provide recommendations for other barns in the area.
